Understand Custom Fields

You can use custom fields (also called metafields or metadata) in Maxio to collect and store additional information from your customers. Custom fields are supported in Subscription and Customer records, on Public Signup Pages (see Understand Public Signup Pages), and in the Billing Portal (see See the Billing Portal Screens Subscribers Use). This data can also be displayed on Invoices or statements, and exported via the Subscriptions CSV export.

Key capabilities

Many merchants use custom fields to gather data that is critical to their operations. This can include collecting details about a purchase or meeting a customer's post-purchase expectations. Examples include:

• T-shirt size
• “Are you a new customer?”
• “How did you hear about us?”
• “Is this purchase a gift?”
• Purchase order number
• Special instructions for handling
• “Would you like a follow-up call?”
• “How should we contact you?” Email / phone / text
• Billing address for invoice-based subscribers without a credit card on file

Additionally, custom fields can be shown to subscribers in the Billing Portal, using the Display Field Data on Customer Portal option.

Alternatively, custom fields can be populated with internal-use data. These fields can be hidden from subscribers and used to categorize Subscriptions or Customers. For example, you can use a custom field to flag which sales channel or campaign brought in a Subscription, for your own internal reporting.

Every display option is set to No when you create a custom field, so a new field stays hidden from subscribers until you turn on the surfaces you want it to appear on. For each option and what it controls, see Configure Custom Fields.

Limitations

Keep these limits in mind when you plan your custom fields:

• A site can have up to 100 custom fields per record type. The limit is counted separately for each type, so you can have 100 Subscription custom fields and 100 Customer custom fields on the same site.
• Test sites are limited to 50 custom fields per record type.
• Creating a custom field beyond the limit fails with an error naming the limit and the record type. Contact Maxio Support if your site needs a higher limit.
